Personal life goals:
Goal #1 Visit various countries in Europe and walk on the Camino de Santiago in Spain (possible retirement goal).
-I love being a tourist, even in the areas I have lived. Sightseeing and learning about different cultures is such an eye opening opportunity many people do not get in person so I hope to someday see, eat, and experience different cultures. Eating delicious international cuisine isn't too bad either.
Goal #2 Run a full marathon.
- I have a half marathon, 10K, and several 5Ks under my belt but the full marathon has, so far, remained elusive. I have always loved running as it's a physical and spiritual self-care tool of mine. I like the idea of a full marathon being a physical and mental challenge as well. The more challenged I can complete, the more experiences I have to offer others.
Goal #3 See my children change the world (1 college graduate so far!).
-My four children have vastly different personalities so it will be quite a journey to see the different paths they will take as they become adults. We have tried to raise them in a love filled home with open communications, conversations with a variety of views & ideas, and respect for each other. I hope that they will carry these values into their world outside our home and expand on them into helping themselves and others to becoming people who love and respect one another, always.
Professional goals:
Goal #1 Work in a labor and delivery or postpartum department in San Antonio, TX -I have worked as a Birth Assistant for the Austin Area Birth Center from March 2020 until June 2020 and student apprentice at the San Antonio Birth center from September 2020 to November 2020. I helped prepare a birth suite for birthing families, charted for births, assisted the midwife by providing necessary supplies and equipment, provided postpartum & breastfeeding care and education, and cleaned the birth suite for the next family. This was a great learning experience to see a variety of Nurse Midwives and Certified Professional Midwives interact in a busy birthing center and different styles of practice. Goal #2 Work with hospital-based midwives to enhance improved birth experiences for families -Since all of my prior observed births have been in hospitals and birth centers, it would be an amazing learning experience to observe and assist in a midwifery led birth. Seeing the difference in care from a medical model to a midwifery model can show me the contrast in certain aspects of care and interventions as well as what aspects remain the same to manage any complications or unexpected events that may arise. Goal #3 Enhancing pregnancy, labor, and postpartum access to care for lower income families and people of color. -Since starting birth work, I have primarily cared for younger and lower income birthing families of color. Some would prefer a birth center or home but the state of Texas currently does not cover CPMs under Medicaid and major health insurances. I plan to advocate more improve access to midwifery, improve insurance coverage for community birth, and establish a community birth center in a neighborhood that usually lacks medical providers and birth families have to travel far away from their homes, even if they lack transportation or family support during their pre and postnatal period. Meeting people where they are is paramount to improving birth outcomes. |
